What is Fully Guided Dental Implant Surgery?

DENTAL IMPLANTS NEAR PITTSBORO, NC

If you are considering dental implants, you may hear terms like “digital implant planning” or “fully guided implant surgery.” But what do those terms actually mean, and why should they matter when choosing an implant dentist?

At Central Carolina Dentistry, digital technology allows Dr. David Baranowski to carefully plan dental implant treatment before the surgical procedure begins. For appropriate cases, that planning can then be translated into a customized surgical guide used during implant placement. It is all part of our philosophy of digitally driven dentistry.

    HOW ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS PLANNED?

Successful dental implant treatment starts with understanding exactly what is happening beneath the surface.

Traditional dental X-rays provide important information, but modern CBCT imaging creates a three-dimensional view of the teeth, jawbone, and surrounding anatomy. Digital intraoral scanning can also create a detailed model of the mouth without relying solely on traditional impressions. Together, these technologies give Dr. David detailed information to evaluate the proposed implant site and plan treatment around each patient’s individual anatomy.

WHAT DOES “FULLY GUIDED” IMPLANT SURGERY MEAN?

Once the necessary digital information has been collected, the dental implant can be planned virtually.

Dr. David can evaluate where an implant should be positioned based on the available bone, surrounding anatomy, and the tooth or restoration the implant will eventually support.

For appropriate cases, that digital plan can be used to create a custom surgical guide. During implant placement, the guide helps translate the predetermined implant position from the digital treatment plan to the patient’s mouth. The result is an implant procedure built around careful planning from the beginning.

        WHY DOES DIGITAL PLANNING MATTER?

A dental implant is ultimately there to support a tooth.

That makes the final restoration an important part of planning the surgical procedure. Digital implant planning allows the team to consider the desired final result when determining the position of the implant itself.

It can also provide a detailed view of the patient’s anatomy before treatment begins, helping Dr. David determine whether additional procedures, such as bone grafting, may need to become part of the treatment plan.

For patients, this creates a more informed and personalized approach to implant dentistry.

          WHAT CAN DENTAL IMPLANTS REPLACE?

Dental implants can be used in many different ways depending on the extent of tooth loss.

A single implant can support a replacement tooth. Multiple implants may support a bridge when several teeth are missing. Implants can also provide additional stability for dentures or serve as the foundation for fixed full-arch tooth replacement.

Central Carolina Dentistry offers implant-supported treatment ranging from individual implant crowns and bridges to implant overdentures, Locator Fixed Teeth, and All-on-X Fixed Teeth.

The right treatment depends on your oral health, anatomy, goals, and budget.
