For some patients, learning that they need a dental implant, extraction, or bone graft immediately brings up another question:
“Am I going to be awake for this?”
Dental anxiety is incredibly common, and it can become even more significant when someone is considering a surgical or lengthy dental procedure.
At Central Carolina Dentistry, we believe patient comfort is part of planning excellent dental care. For patients who need a deeper level of relaxation, our team can coordinate IV sedation with licensed dental anesthesiologists during appropriate procedures right here in our Siler City office.
WHAT IS IV SEDATION DENTISTRY?
IV sedation uses medication delivered intravenously to create a deeply relaxed, dream-like state during dental treatment. Patients receiving IV sedation may have little memory of their procedure afterward. Because the medication is administered intravenously, the anesthesia provider can carefully manage sedation throughout treatment.
IV sedation may be considered for patients undergoing procedures such as:
Dental implant placement
Tooth Extractions
Bone Grafting
Multiple procedures completed during one appointment
Other advanced dental treatment
It may also be appropriate for some patients whose dental anxiety has made receiving necessary care particularly difficult.
WHY BRING A DENTAL ANESTHESIOLOGIST INTO THE OFFICE?
Complex dental care requires a team.
During procedures performed with IV sedation at Central Carolina Dentistry, the dental team and anesthesia provider have distinct responsibilities.
Dr. David and the dental team can focus on performing the planned dental procedure. The anesthesia professional focuses on administering sedation and monitoring the patient throughout treatment.
That includes physiological monitoring throughout the procedure.
It is the same philosophy we bring to every aspect of complex dental care: assemble the right team and carefully plan each part of the patient’s treatment.
CAN I HAVE IV SEDATION FOR DENTAL IMPLANTS?
For appropriate patients, yes.
Dental implant treatment is one of the procedures for which IV sedation may be arranged at Central Carolina Dentistry. This can be especially valuable when treatment involves multiple implants, extractions, bone grafting, or other procedures performed during the same surgical appointment.
IV sedation may also make advanced implant treatment feel more approachable for patients who have delayed addressing missing or damaged teeth because they are afraid of the procedure itself.
Every patient is different, so sedation recommendations are made based on your health history, treatment plan, and individual needs.
ARE THERE OTHER SEDATION OPTIONS?
Yes. Deeper sedation is not necessary for every patient or every procedure.
Central Carolina Dentistry also offers nitrous oxide, commonly called laughing gas, as well as medication that may provide mild relaxation for patients with heightened dental anxiety.
Dr. David can discuss your concerns with you and help determine what level of comfort support may be appropriate for your treatment.
